Diabetes: How to Ask for Help
Studies show the amount of support you get from those around you has a direct impact on your level o…
I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes when I was just 21 years old, the daughter of two type 2 parents. Our genetics run deep—almost every adult on my mother’s side now lives with type 2.
At first, I ignored it. I lived in denial for a long time—I call it my young and stupid phase. At 21, you think you’re invincible. I didn’t FEEL sick. I didn’t LOOK sick.
It wasn’t until I got pregnant with my son that I really started paying attention—his life depended on it! My pregnancy was non-eventful, but after he was born, I went back to life in denial.
Years later, when my second child was two, I decided I had had enough. I was tired of being the mom who couldn’t play with her kids. Everything was hard. I took my life back by losing 100 pounds with improved nutrition and exercise.
When Aly was six, I founded Sugar Mama Strong Diabetes Support—an online support group for women living with diabetes. I needed support from people who “got me”.
Our goal is to create a lifelong, healthy relationship with food. There are no “diets” here, just mindful choices based on our body’s responses. Just like every person’s diabetes is different, every woman’s nutrition plan will be slightly different.
Our fitness equals our independence, so it is essential that we incorporate activity into our daily routine. Our Sugar Mama Strong workouts are accessible for EVERY fitness level, and are doable for those living with diabetes complications.
A mindset shift is THE most important part of the journey. We have to address what’s going on between our ears if we want to make permanent lifestyle changes. Neglecting this crucial step is what sets so many up for the start and stop never-ending cycle of dieting.

To be honest, I was very skeptical about joining at first…Not because of you or your group, but because of me and my past behaviors. Also, I was very nervous about my first group meeting, but the accountability and the encouragement and support from this group is absolutely amazing! For the first time in a very long time, I don’t feel hopeless when it comes to losing weight and improving my health. I’m actually so excited about this journey!
Lost 1” off each arm and thigh, lost 2” off my waist, and 3” off my hips! As of today, lost 15 lbs since I started this journey with you, Mary. <3 Thank you for being such a motivator and inspiration!
Running my own business is so busy. I end up with the most random schedule ever, but I’m still paying attention to what I can here!! I’m exercising, watching my carbs, working on my excuses and haven’t had any I don’t think. The results from all this = weight loss, lower fasting glucose levels, lower glucose levels after eating, and a better outlook. When I do my diabetic appointment in March I will definitely see results. Just wanted to let you all know.
