Whether you’ve grown up around this tradition or it’s totally new to you, the concept of a “push present” has been increasing in popularity over the past decade.

What is a push present? It’s a gift given to a new mother at or following childbirth.

We know, we know — the name is a little graphic (a cute alternative is a “baby bauble”). But the miraculous feat of bringing a new human being into the world is amazing (whether you have a vaginal delivery or a C-section!), and many people feel that a mama’s hard work and the pain endured should be recognized with a gift.

Almost every new mother you talk to will say that their baby alone is a priceless gift, and nothing else is needed. But if you want to show some extra appreciation for your partner during this huge life event, a push present may be the perfect way to do so (especially if your SO’s love language is receiving gifts).

A push present is usually given by the new mom’s significant other or family members, and the most typical gift is jewelry. However, a push present can be anything that they would love!

We polled a group of parents, and there were some very creative ideas for push presents — everything from sushi to handmade shelves to an expensive bottle of tequila. You can absolutely get creative and customize your gift specifically for your particular mama-to-be.

One factor to consider is timing. Many people prefer to give the push present at the hospital, when the new mama is recovering from labor.

Choose a private, quiet moment when they’re not being examined, having their vitals taken, or trying to decide when to give baby’s first bath. It’s common to be exhausted and a little distracted after childbirth, so wait for a lull in all the activity.

Some people prefer to give the gift before the baby’s birth (before things get sleepless), while others wait until they are home from the hospital and settling in.

It’s ultimately a personal decision, and you know your significant other best. Whatever you decide, this is sure to be a memorable moment for you both. The birth of a baby is also the birth of a mother, and a push present can be a thoughtful way to acknowledge all they are experiencing.

While the name sounds pretty exclusive to the partner birthing the baby, you might wonder whether dads ever get push presents (after all, they’ve hopefully been a major source of support during this pregnancy, and are themselves undergoing the huge transition to parenthood).

Historically, the answer is no. Push presents are specifically for the person giving birth.

However, if you (the birthing parent) want to show appreciation for all the support you’ve been given by your partner, a gift is a wonderful way to do that! Think of it as a way to say thanks for all the patience, midnight ice cream runs, and foot massages. Check out this list for some ideas.

For this list we polled new moms, pored over reviews, and considered quality, function, and sentiment above all.

To find a push present for the new mom in your life, read on! Whether they love jewelry, reading, or sentimental keepsakes, we’ve rounded up some sure-to-please gifts for any mama.
