University of Michigan Department of Psychiatry - Anxiety Disorder Specialist

Job Summary
The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan is seeking a full-time, tenure or clinical-track faculty member with expertise in adult Anxiety Disorders. We seek a motivated psychiatrist to join one of the country’s first academic Anxiety Clinics, now evaluating ~500 new patients each year and offering state-of-the-art psychopharmacologic and psychotherapeutic treatments. Interest and skills in both research and clinical care are important, but the balance can be adapted to individual strengths. Specific interests can focus on any of the anxiety disorders (and, yes, we still consider OCD to be an anxiety disorder), and research interests can involve neuroimaging, psychoneuroendocrinology, genetics and genomics, sleep, clinical trials (using meds and/or psychotherapy), health services research, and substance abuse (all areas in which we have existing expertise and willing collaborators and mentors). We are also open to developing new areas of foci and expertise. The ideal candidate will either be starting to build a research portfolio in an anxiety-related domain, with potential to obtain independent research funding, or have the skills and interests needed to develop into a clinical leader, or both.

This position will report through the Anxiety Clinic Program Director (Dr. Abelson, who has run the Program for 22 years, following 18 years of leadership by George Curtis, MD).

Clinical, Educational, and Administrative Activities
We encourage all members of our Anxiety Program to become active participants on our highly vibrant, inter-disciplinary clinical team (with psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurse practitioners, and trainees from all disciplines). We expect involvement in this clinical operation, including supervision of psychiatry residents rotating in the Anxiety Clinic.  Future clinic leadership is possible for the right candidate. Distribution of effort between clinical, research and educational activities is open to negotiation. Considerable flexibility is possible, though external funding is needed to sustain longer term research effort. All of our faculty physicians also provide a small amount of hospital-based clinical services (weekend rounding on our inpatient unit 2-3 times per year and telephone back-up to residents on night call in our Psychiatry Emergency Services, 6 nights per year, from home).

Primary educational duties involve staffing and supervising psychiatry residents in the Anxiety Clinic. There are also opportunities to provide didactics in our resident core as well as opportunities to help train our social workers, psychologists, and nurses.

All faculty participate in routine administrative activities (e.g., attending Academic Staff, All-Staff, team meetings).  There will also be opportunities for administrative/leadership development for those interested and appropriately skilled.

Required Qualifications
Applicants must hold MD or DO degrees and have completed a psychiatric residency. Fellowship and additional post-training experience is a plus. A beginning track record in extramural research funding is important for applicants who want to focus significant time on scientific activities. Possession of a license to practice medicine in the State of Michigan is required before on-boarding can be completed. Applicants must be board certified or board eligible in Psychiatry. We are particularly seeking applicants who show promise for an academic career that spans research, clinical care, teaching and leadership/administration. Superior clinical competencies and master teacher skills highly valued.

University of Michigan Postdoctoral Fellowship in Developmental/Clinical Translational Neuroscience

A postdoctoral scientist with extensive neuroimaging or EEG experience is sought to work on NIH-funded clinical trial research. This work uses fMRI and EEG to examine how cognitive behavioral therapy modulates networks underlying threat reactivity and anxiety regulation in children and adolescents with OCD and/or anxiety disorders. EEG and EMG are also used to test engagement of the same networks before and after a novel effortful control training intervention in clinically anxious preschoolers. The expected impact of these projects is an improved understanding of brain networks relevant for early onset anxiety, enabling neuromodulatory therapy sensitive to illness stage via cognitive training and/or brain stimulation techniques. We are particularly excited about candidates with a strong background in fMRI methods who are also strong writers. We want someone who can jump right into data analysis and manuscript write-up. Research, training, education, and mentorship are offered in the context of the PI’s lab which interfaces with very active group pursuing mechanistic and translational research in psychiatric disorders in adult and pediatric populations using a variety of brain mapping modalities. The candidate will have access to state-of-the-art brain imaging facilities and computational resources at the University of Michigan. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in a relevant field (e.g. clinical, developmental, cognitive or social psychology or neuroscience).  Please email a CV, statement of research interests and relevant background to Dr. Kate Fitzgerald at krd@med.umich.edu.

The Position:  Primary Therapists are licensed clinicians providing individual treatment planning and case management for a case-load of up to 4, private pay residents between the ages of 13-20 years old.  Delivering individual, group, and family therapy as well as collaborating with clients to address their fears, worries and avoidance with CBT-based exposure therapy, therapists function within a clinical and residential team structure.  Clients typically stay between 60-90 days and come from across the globe.  Therapists receive clinical supervision and on-going training from licensed psychologists, psychiatrists and experts in CBT modalities such as DBT and ACT and other professional development opportunities such as attendance at IOCDF, ABCT, and ADAA conferences and training events.  Above average, competitive salary and full benefits as well as relocation assistance available.  A casual, professional and team-focused environment.  Mountain Valley is an equal opportunity employer.

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University

POST-DOCTORAL FELLOW IN NEUROIMAGING AND AFFECTIVE-COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENCE

JOB DESCRIPTION

A postdoctoral position is available for a qualified and creative scientist with training suited to analysis of big datasets of functional neuroimaging data. These datasets also include behavioral, VR and momentary sampling data acquired on the same human subjects. Specific experience in high level functional neuroimaging data analysis is essential. Because of the scope of the project an interest and capacity for connecting neuroimaging data to other measures of brain function and behavior is also important. Because this integrative approach is applied within a study assessing depression and weight management outcomes, experience with clinical populations is also desirable.

This position would have the opportunity to jump immediately into data analysis and publication, and in parallel be part of an ongoing study. The study is funded under the NIH Science of Behavior Change priority initiative. In this study we have already completed acquisition baseline neuroimaging data. Repeat scans, and associated behavioral and VR measures.

Our scientific goals are both basic and applied. We want to use data-driven approaches to identifying subgroups of people based on their profiles of brain activation and connectivity. We focus in particular on intrinsic brain networks such as the default mode, as well as task-evoked networks implicated in emotion regulation and cognitive control. We also seek to understand which of these networks, and subgroups defined by network profiles, relate to which aspects of behavior in self-report, cognitive-emotional testing, VR and passive sampling settings. Our precision health question is to understand whether and how changes in brain networks predict changes in behavior over time, focusing on mood and weight management outcomes. We will use this information to tailor future interventions for depression and accompanying weight management.  This study is a two-phase project funded through the NIH Common Fund’s Science of Behavior Change roadmap initiative. The position will be based at Stanford, within the William’s Panlab.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. in cognitive neuroscience/neuroimaging or related fields.

  1. Profound experience in statistical analysis and data-driven computational approaches.
  2. High level experience with functional magnetic resonance imaging, including analysis of activation and of connectivity.
  3. Familiarity in how to implement multivariate computational models for integrating neuroimaging data with behavioral and self-report data.
  4. A demonstrated capacity to drive first author publications.
  5. A clear interest and motivation to pursue research in neuroimaging relevant to precision mental health and innovative ways to think about the science of behavior change.
  6. The capacity to interpret the clinical relevance of human neuroscience results.
  7. We also require an ability to work collaboratively and self-motivation.
