In "The Simpsons" first episode, Homer and Bart go to the dog-racing track to win money for Christmas presents and all they end up with is a slowpoke pooch. Oh, that and more than 670 episodes, a record for a scripted prime-time series.
The 30th anniversary of "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire,” which premiered Dec. 17, 1989, is the latest milestone for a culture-shaping series spawned by animated shorts that began two years earlier on “The Tracey Ullman Show.” The Fox animated classic continues its Christmas-episode tradition Sunday (8 EST/PST) with “Bobby, It’s Cold Outside,” which includes another "Simpsons" evergreen, the unholy Sideshow Bob (Kelsey Grammer).
Matt Groening's creation, centered around Homer and Marge Simpson and their three children, Bart, Lisa and Maggie, hit the rarefied air of 500 episodes in 2012 and joined “Gunsmoke” as only the second series to reach 600 four years later.

It finally surpassed that classic Western's 635 episodes in 2018 – commemorated with a black-and-white illustration of Homer and baby daughter Maggie dueling Marshal Matt Dillon. (FXX begins a 15-day marathon of 661 episodes from the first 30 seasons starting Tuesday at 8 EST/PST.)
In a 2007 interview, Groening reflected on the broad and enduring appeal of the comedy, which helped make the Fox network: "I love the style that we stumbled into, this high-velocity pacing that allowed us to do every kind of comedy we could think of, from the most highfalutin literary references to sub-Three Stooges physical abuse."
Although "The Simpsons," recipient of 34 Emmys, is years past peak cultural dominance and many fans profess their love for the early seasons vs. the later ones, new episodes perform well for Fox and the show's library serves as a major selling point for the Disney+ streaming service. It's renewed through its 32nd season in 2021, which would bring the tally to more than 700 episodes.
A UK software start-up developing hologram technology has secured more than £3m for its technology. VividQ, a Cambridge-based start-up founded in 2017 by a team drawn from the Universities of Cambridge, Oxford and St Andrews, develops software for holograms for displays such as smart glasses or car heads-up displays.
The start-up has raised £2.4m in funds from venture investors, including the Japanese investor University of Tokyo Edge Capital. Earlier this year it raised £1m from Sure Valley Ventures, a UK-listed fund.
While holograms have become known for their use in re-animated celebrities and musicians for concerts, they are increasingly being applied to consumer electronics. VividQ’s software powers equipment made in the US, China and Japan. Holographic technology is more than 70 years old, but has failed to penetrate consumer devices.
In recent years, interest in augmented reality and virtual reality technology has grown, although these rely on more traditional screen technologies and displays with high pixel density.

While VR headsets are expected to sell around 9 million units this year, both technologies have been held back by problems with field of view and motion sickness. Start-ups such as Florida’s Magic Leap have raised billions of dollars to develop so-called “mixed reality” headsets, offering up virtual images through digital goggles, but they have only sold in small numbers.
Greta Thunberg sits in silence in the cabin of the boat that will take her across the Atlantic Ocean. Inside, there’s a cow skull hanging on the wall, a faded globe, a child’s yellow raincoat. Outside, it’s a tempest: rain pelts the boat, ice coats the decks, and the sea batters the vessel that will take this slight girl, her father and a few companions from Virginia to Portugal. For a moment, it’s as if Thunberg were the eye of a hurricane, a pool of resolve at the center of swirling chaos. In here, she speaks quietly. Out there, the entire natural world seems to amplify her small voice, screaming along with her.
“We can’t just continue living as if there was no tomorrow, because there is a tomorrow,” she says, tugging on the sleeve of her blue sweatshirt. “That is all we are saying.”
It’s a simple truth, delivered by a teenage girl in a fateful moment.

The sailboat, La Vagabonde, will shepherd Thunberg to the Port of Lisbon, and from there she will travel to Madrid, where the United Nations is hosting this year’s climate conference. It is the last such summit before nations commit to new plans to meet a major deadline set by the Paris Agreement. Unless they agree on transformative action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the world’s temperature rise since the Industrial Revolution will hit the 1.5°C mark—an eventuality that scientists warn will expose some 350 million additional people to drought and push roughly 120 million people into extreme poverty by 2030. For every fraction of a degree that temperatures increase, these problems will worsen. This is not fearmongering; this is science. For decades, researchers and activists have struggled to get world leaders to take the climate threat seriously. But this year, an unlikely teenager somehow got the world’s attention.
Thunberg began a global movement by skipping school: starting in August 2018, she spent her days camped out in front of the Swedish Parliament, holding a sign painted in black letters on a white background that read Skolstrejk för klimatet: “School Strike for Climate.” In the 16 months since, she has addressed heads of state at the U.N., met with the Pope, sparred with the President of the United States and inspired 4 million people to join the global climate strike on September 20, 2019, in what was the largest climate demonstration in human history. Her image has been celebrated in murals and Halloween costumes, and her name has been attached to everything from bike shares to beetles. Margaret Atwood compared her to Joan of Arc. After noticing a hundredfold increase in its usage, lexicographers at Collins Dictionary named Thunberg’s pioneering idea, climate strike, the word of the year.
A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying a communications satellite for mobile and broadband service over the Asia-Pacific region blasted off from Cape Canaveral and vaulted into space Monday, just 11 days after another Falcon 9 took off from the same pad on a supply run to the International Space Station.
As with that December 5 flight, the Falcon 9's twice-flown first stage returned to Earth after boosting the vehicle out of the dense lower atmosphere, dropping to an on-target touchdown aboard a SpaceX droneship — the "Of Course I Still Love You" — stationed in the Atlantic Ocean east off Florida's "Space Coast."
The successful recovery, some 8½ minutes after launch, was SpaceX's 47th overall and its 29th aboard a droneship. The 11-day turnaround of pad 40 was a company record.
But as always, the primary goal of Monday's mission was to boost the Boeing-built JCSAT-18/Kacific 1 satellite into space and the Falcon 9 did just that, blasting off from pad 40 at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at 7:10 p.m. and climbing smoothly away through a clear evening sky.

Two firings of the Falcon's second stage engine were required to put the satellite into the desired elliptical "transfer" orbit. On-board thrusters will be used over the next several weeks to put the craft into its operational circular orbit 22,300 miles above the equator. The JCSAT-18/Kacific 1 satellite — expected to operate for at least 15 years — is jointly owned by SKY Perfect JSAT of Tokyo and the Singapore startup Kacific Broadband Satellites.
SKY Perfect, the largest satellite communications provider in Asia, will use its half of the new relay station's Ka- and Ku-band transponders to provide high-speed mobile and broadband services across the Asia-Pacific region and parts of far eastern Russia.
Kacific will provide 56 Ka-band spot beams to selected underserved areas of southeast Asia and the Pacific islands, carrying broadband internet for government services, healthcare and disaster relief.
As I squeezed my way through the crowd, Marion Symonds was busy crimping one side of a 4.5m-long pasty in the central plaza. All eyes were on this Cornish baker as she held the still-malleable pastry shell in her hands, delicately crimping the edges of the dough with her fingertips to seal in the beef, potato and onion.
Looking at the sloping red roofs and manicured gardens around us, you’d have thought Symonds and I were somewhere in our native England. In fact, we were in the tiny town of Real del Monte in the central Mexican state of Hidalgo. At the other end of the oversized snack, a local chef was crimping the Mexican way, slapping the pastry shut with the side of a hand atop a table.
To understand why a giant Mexi-Cornish pasty was being made in an English-looking town in central Mexico, we must go back two centuries to what Bridget Galsworthy Estavillo of Mexico’s British Society calls ‘the backbone’ of the story: the arrival of Cornish miners in Mexico.

In the early 19th Century, Cornish tin miners were known around the world for their state-of-the-art mining equipment and, consequently, their expertise in operating it. As such, they and their advanced machinery were called to Mexico by the Company of Gentleman Adventurers in the Mines of Real del Monte to help mine silver, Galsworthy Estavillo told me. After landing in Veracruz on Mexico’s east coast in 1825, the first wave of Cornish miners made the 400km journey west to the Central Highlands of Mexico where they set to work extracting silver, simultaneously establishing tight-knit British communities and welcoming new waves of Cornish migrants practically each year up until 1840.
While Galsworthy Estavillo was quick to note that “the first wave [of Cornish miners didn’t come] out of desperation,” many later arrivals were driven by necessity, as a direct result of the discovery of tin in Bolivia and Malaysia in the 19th Century. This led to the closure of many of Cornwall’s tin mines and kicked off a severe economic slump that left miners with little option but to make their way to pre-established Cornish diaspora communities overseas, Mexico included.
As the miners established Cornish enclaves, they also began to cement their legacy in Hidalgo, introducing those oh-so-English sloping roofs and their beloved pasties.
