Andres Romero, M.D., is a specialist in infectious diseases. Early in his education Dr. Romero was intrigued by the intricacies of the human body and becoming a physician represented the opportunity to be an influence and promote change in the field. His exposure to complex infectious disease cases provided him with a sophisticated way of approaching the outstanding combination of variables involved in every case. He thrives to provide empathetic and compassionate care while advocating to deliver personalized medicine to his patients.
Dr. Romero was a resident of the Internal Medicine program at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was given the highest award for outstanding efforts in research for his work in MRSA colonization and infection during his senior year in training. After Yale, he went to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and joined their division of Infectious Diseases where he completed his fellowship. His training included treating a full array of infections in heavily immunocompromised patients. He developed a unique approach and experience handling extremely complex clinical scenarios through comprehensive clinical evaluation, critical thinking and pioneering interventions in the care of severely ill patients. This was a unique experience only available in a few centers in the world and it gave Dr. Romero a special perspective in the practice of medicine while caring for his patients. At Sloan Kettering he continued working on several research projects related to infectious complications of cancer treatment and upcoming immunotherapies. He has several publications in peer-reviewed journals and has presented his work at national meetings over the years.
Dr. Romero believes that delivering accurate information targeted to help a patient understand a condition is paramount in the process of making informed decisions about their health. Empowering patients over their illness has become the most rewarding aspect of his professional life. It leads to optimal rapport, increased adherence to therapies and improved outcomes.
When not helping his patients, he can be found working on improving his swimming free style stroke timing. He also loves teaching and encouraging his own 4-year old boy to be confident in the water.
