Here are some rules of thumb for assessing pillow quality and features:
- Get a pillow that’s CertiPUR-US and Greenguard Gold certified for less chemical odor. Chemicals called volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can off-gas from factory materials and make pillows smell funny. CertiPUR-US or Greenguard Gold certified pillows tend to off-gas less and don’t smell as much.
- Get at least 7 inches of height. A good wedge pillow provides at least 7 inches for a gradual but effective incline that keeps acid down and relieves pressure on the neck and back.
- Get latex or foam fillers. Tall pillows with steep inclines tend to maintain their shape longer with firm but supportive materials like latex or memory foam. Feather or down pillows tend to compress over time.
