Not sure what sunscreen brand to reach for? Don’t worry. We have you — and your skin — covered! Here’s the ultimate breakdown of the best sunscreens for all skin types and budgets.

Sunscreen fast facts 🌞

  • SPF means sun protection factor. You should always use a minimum of SPF 30 daily.
  • Reapply every 2 hours for maximum protection.
  • You should wear sunscreen even when indoors. Rays can still cause damage through windows.
  • Follow the shot glass rule. Most adults need about one ounce of sunscreen to thoroughly cover their body, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD).
  • Cover any area of skin that isn’t protected by clothing. Don’t forget your lips, ears, eyelids, hands, back of the neck, and tops of feet!

UV radiation (UV) from the sun can cause premature aging, skin cancer, and other health conditions. Using sunscreen on the daily can prevent this. But keep in mind, not all sunscreens are created equally.

The best sunscreen for you depends on your unique needs. Look out for a brand’s SPF, water resistance, allergens, and active ingredients.

Chemical vs. mineral sunscreens

Chemical sunscreens are made with oxybenzone and/or avobenzone. These ingredients absorb UV rays before they can leak into your skin.

Mineral sunscreen (aka physical sunblock) has active ingredients like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. These minerals may help deflect UVA and UVB rays. They’re also dope for sensitive skin.

The price range uses the following scale. It’s based on the cost of product per ounce (oz.):

$ = under $5 per oz.
$$ = $6–$10 per oz.
$$$ = $11–$20 per oz.
$$$$ = over $20 an oz.

Sorry, Flipper — some sunscreens can hurt marine life.

Chemical sunscreens often have oxybenzone and octinoxate which can damage coral. It doesn’t matter if you splish-splash far from reefs. The chemicals in sunscreen can eventually make their way into vulnerable marine ecosystems.

Stick to mineral-only sunscreen when you swim with the fishes.

Note: You don’t have to only stick to sunblock. You can also wear a rash guard, T-shirt, or other protective clothing to block out UV rays.
