About ANNIE MILLER

I am a therapist. More specifically I am a clinical social worker. I worked for three years doing psychotherapy to earn my clinical license, which designates me as an LCSW-C in Maryland, LICSW in DC and I also have my LCSW in Virginia. I have been a social worker since 2007 and I started my own private practice in 2016.

How I Got Here

I come from a family of therapists and this was a natural choice for me, though my career started off in a different direction. I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor’s Degree and I was always interested in film and television. My first job after college was at the Sundance Channel in New York. There I worked in programming and I had a particular interest in documentary film programming. While there were many aspects about that industry that I loved, I felt pulled towards therapy and mental health.

I am from the DC Metro area originally and this is home for me. I live in the area with my husband and daughter, not far from where I grew up. I am still very interested in film and I have a passion for documentary films, in particular. I also enjoy being outside and taking walks any chance I can get.

My Career as a Therapist

I earned my Master’s Degree in social work (MSW) from the University of Chicago and from there I was drawn to medical settings. I worked in different hospitals, including Johns Hopkins Hospital, Washington Hospital Center and Montefiore Medical Center. These experiences taught me how to work with chronic illness, medical-related issues and chronic pain. I use techniques learned in these settings to help manage pain, illness and sleep disorders and I can help clients navigate the complicated medical system.

Additionally, I completed a Child and Adolescent certificate program and I have worked with adolescents and families throughout my career. I completed an intensive EMDR training program to focus on working with individuals who have experienced trauma. I have also been trained in CBT-i and have a broad understanding of sleep disorders. I have completed a number of programs in Behavioral Sleep Medicine and participate in regular supervision training.

What I Do Best

I was trained in talk therapy and still love to incorporate these skills into every session, though over the years I have learned techniques to add to my toolbox. I enjoy incorporating EMDR and CBT-i into my practice to help with insomnia, trauma, anxiety, phobias and pain. I have also studied the brain and neuroplasticity and incorporate these principles into each of my sessions as well. My strongest areas of expertise are: anxiety, trauma/PTSD, insomnia, teen therapy, and chronic pain and illness.

I work collaboratively with you to determine the best way to help you reach your goals.
